Life In A Holler

Fried Green Tomatoes

Hey y’all!

It’s a hot summer here in the holler but we are enjoying the family time together. We (more like my husband) have started a small garden and we are starting to enjoy the fruits of his labor. We plucked a few delicious GREEN tomatoes and decided we would do what every good Southerner would do and fry up some green tomatoes. I absolutely love to eat them and love that movie, don’t y’all!?

Here is how I made these delicious southern delicacies:

Heat oil in your cast iron skillet to medium-high heat. Be sure to add enough to almost cover the tomatoes.

Start by prepping your tomatoes (washing and slicing), then add bread crumbs into a bowl, flour and seasonings into a separate bowl (be sure to mix well), and then scrabble eggs in another bowl.

Place each tomato into the flour to coat completely, then dip into the egg bowl and cover, and finally dip into the bread crumb mixture.

Once each piece is coated, add them to your pan. It will take about about 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown .Remove from pan and place on paper towel covered dish. Sprinkle with salt if desired. Here is what you will need:

3 green tomatoes

1 cup of flour

1 cup of bread crumbs

2 eggs

1 tablespoon of paprika and black pepper

1 teaspoon of salt

We served with a dip made with 1 cup of mayo and 2 tablespoons of Siracha sauce. This was a little spicy but delicious! You can alter the amount of Siracha to fit your taste.

Enjoy!
